A samurai from the end of the Edo period travels back in time to the present day! "Samurai Time Slipper," which depicts the story of a samurai from the end of the Edo period who carves out a new life for himself as an actor killed in a period drama, continues to grow in popularity. It is directed by Junichi Yasuda, who juggles filmmaking with his work as a rice farmer. Period dramas typically require significantly more budget than works set in the present day, but we spoke to Director Yasuda about taking on the seemingly foolhardy challenge of independently producing a period drama, and turning it into a huge hit despite being almost penniless at one point. --Congratulations on the huge success. When you were making it, did you expect it to be as big a hit as it is now? Director: I was hoping it would be a hit, and I wanted to recoup at least some of the budget we spent. --The production budget for your previous film, "A Gun and a Fried Egg" (2014), was 7.5 million yen, your previous film, "Rice" (2017), was 4 million yen, and this film cost 26 million yen. This is a bold amount for an indie film. Director: I thought that if I was aiming for a hit like One Cut of the Dead, I needed an incredibly interesting original story and script. When I wrote the script for this film, I thought to myself, "I've created something interesting." So I had a number of people read it, and they all said, "If we can shoot it as is, it could be interesting." I thought that this was the only thing I could make interesting with the skills I had at the time, so I spent my savings, sold my car, and decided that I should make it, even if it meant putting in a certain amount of money.
