We fully enjoyed deep, local-recommended, cost-effective gourmet experiences and historical insights—truly a hidden gem for adults! The name "Kokura" in Kitakyushu/Kokura refers to two of the seven wards that make up Kitakyushu City: Kokura Kita Ward and Kokura Minami Ward. As the first station in Kyushu where the Shinkansen stops, it's the central district of Kitakyushu City, boasting abundant tourist spots and gourmet food. The population of Kita Ward is approximately 180,000. The population of Minami Ward is approximately 200,000. Kokura boasts numerous popular tourist attractions, including Kokura Castle, built by Hosokawa Tadaoki over seven years starting in 1602. The castle's distinctive feature is its "Kara-zukuri" style keep, where the fifth floor is larger than the fourth, lacking a roof overhang between them. Furthermore, Kokura offers a wealth of attractions, including the Tanga Market, known as the "kitchen of Kitakyushu" and boasting over 100 years of history since its founding in the Taisho era; Riverwalk Kitakyushu; Chacha Town Kokura; the TOTO Museum; Mojiko Craft Beer Brewery; and the Kitakyushu City Manga Museum. Kokura also offers a rich culinary scene, with everything from high-end sushi and oden to local udon, bread, and sandwiches—so much so that you can't possibly experience it all in one trip. With the opening of the Yawata Steel Works in 1901 (Meiji 34), Kitakyushu, with its many workers operating in three shifts, valued establishments where people could drink day and night, and many bars and restaurants are open from midday.
