This time, we'll thoroughly introduce a fantastic and incredibly delicious 2-day/1-night gourmet trip to Kitakyushu and Kokura that you absolutely must experience! This is a hidden gem for adults, a deep dive into local favorites, offering amazing value for money on gourmet food and plenty of historical insights! The name "Kokura" refers to two of the seven wards that make up Kitakyushu City: Kokura Kita Ward and Kokura Minami Ward. As the first station in Kyushu where the Shinkansen stops, it's the central district of Kitakyushu City, boasting a wealth of tourist attractions and gourmet food. The population of Kita Ward is approximately 180,000, and the population of Minami Ward is approximately 200,000. One of Kokura's tourist attractions is Kokura Castle, built by Hosokawa Tadaoki over seven years starting in 1602. Kokura Castle is characterized by its "Kara-zukuri" style keep, where there is no roof overhang between the fourth and fifth floors, with the fifth floor being larger than the fourth. Furthermore, Kitakyushu boasts numerous popular tourist attractions, including the Tanga Market, known as the "kitchen of Kitakyushu," which originated in the Taisho era and boasts a history of over 100 years; Riverwalk Kitakyushu; Chacha Town Kokura; TOTO Museum; Mojiko Craft Beer Brewery; and Kitakyushu City Manga Museum. The area also offers a wealth of culinary delights, from high-end sushi restaurants and oden to local udon, bread, and sandwiches—so much so that you can't possibly try it all in one trip. With the opening of the Yawata Steel Works in 1901 (Meiji 34), Kitakyushu had many workers who worked in three shifts, making places where you could drink day and night highly valued, and there are many establishments that serve drinks from lunchtime onwards.
