Appleby-in-Westmorland Walk: Town Centre & Castle【4K】
Located in the county of Cumbria (although historically in Westmorland, as referenced in its name), and around 30 miles southeast of Carlisle, is the town of Appleby-in-Westmorland. Geographically, Appleby is situated around a meander of the River Eden, with the Yorkshire Dales just to the south and the North Pennines just to the north and east. Viking settlers arrived here in the 9th century, which would account for the town's name deriving from Old Norse for 'place with apple trees'. During the 12th century the Normans built a castle at Appleby, which was later rebuilt in stone in the 13th century. The castle was damaged by Scottish raids during the First War of Scottish Independence around the late 13th and early 14th centuries. In the 17th century Lady Anne Clifford renovated and extended the castle, which has in recent years opened to the public as a museum, featuring one of the few intact Norman keeps in Britain. At the heart of the town centre is the Parish Church of St Lawrence. This dates back to the 12th century, with additions up to the 14th century and various bouts of restoration during the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The church is Grade I listed. In 1179 a market charter was granted to Appleby by Henry II. Historic industries associated with the town have included agriculture, wool, brewing and leather tanning. In 1862 the railway arrived in Appleby courtesy of the Eden Valley Railway. A second station opened in 1876, which became known as Appleby West, while the original became Appleby East. In 1962 the original station closed, though the station formerly known as Appleby West remains open to this day as one of the stops on the iconic Settle and Carlisle Line which connects Carlisle to Leeds via the stunning terrain of the Yorkshire Dales. Historically, Appleby was the county town of Westmorland up until the ceremonial county of Cumbria was established in April 1974, whose county town is Carlisle. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
