Productores de cítricos ecológicos en Almería comercializan el producto de forma integral

In Gádor, in the province of Almería, an Agricultural Transformation Society brings together nearly a thousand organic citrus growers from across Andalusia to produce all kinds of products derived from organic oranges. They export them to markets throughout Europe. They joined together as a Citrus Producers Organization in 1993 to access EU subsidies. They started with 12 members; today they have 920, cultivating 985 hectares spread across 42 municipalities. These members and farmers harvest the produce from all over Andalusia and sell it here fresh, in bulk, as juice, as mandarins, and even as lemons. The discarded fruit is used as animal feed, and they also plan to build a jam factory. They have a turnover of around 20 million kilos, generating approximately 25 million euros. The challenges are the price of water and generational succession. This year, production costs have risen, the transport strike has paralyzed factories, and the fear of trucks being intercepted by picketers has taken its toll at the start of the year. Added to this is the competition from oranges in the South African market. Grouping together and growing under the umbrella of oranges, going organic and utilizing the entire product—ideas that preserve the population and traditional crops that bring life, color, and modernity to our villages.
