The Morteratsch glacier is retreating more and more and the rock face is getting longer and longer. In 110 years, from 1900 to 2010, the glacier has receded by more than two kilometers. The Morteratsch glacier is the largest in the Bernina massif in Switzerland. Around the world, glaciers are retreating. The contraction of their white peaks began in the mid-19th century, during the great industrial revolutions, and continues, at an unprecedented rate, to the present day. There is little doubt that this is one of many responses to global warming. In many regions, particularly in the Alps, the retreat of snow-covered peaks has accelerated in recent decades. Since 1860, the Morteratsch glacier has retreated over a distance of 2,700 meters to a rocky outcrop, which is difficult to see when hiking. The Morteratsch hike is a real journey within a journey for all those who love Switzerland and its spectacular, but not pristine, nature. The melting of the glaciers in Switzerland is the most visible sign of climate change. Their disappearance not only hurts the heart and makes for a distressing spectacle, it also destroys a myth: the face of the Alps will never be the same again. According to the WWF, Switzerland's glaciers have lost 33% of their surface area over the past 40 years. The negative record, unfortunately, is held by the Morteratsch ice, which has retreated by almost 80 meters in just a few years. In Gland, Switzerland, at the headquarters of the organization, experts and nations unite to try to stop this scourge. This is crucial not only to save local tourism, but also, and above all, for the survival of many animal and plant species that live on these wonderful territories. If climate change continues unchecked, Switzerland risks finding itself without ice by the end of the century.
