Neck pain that radiates down the arm can be caused by a cervical herniated disc, but it doesn't always mean you need surgery. In this video, we show you a real case of a 41-year-old patient with a C5-C6 cervical herniated disc, very intense pain, several visits to the emergency room, difficulty sleeping, and very little improvement with analgesics, corticosteroids, and anti-inflammatories. In this case, the herniation was compressing the nerve root and causing very debilitating pain. Although it was a large herniation, and in many situations surgery might have been considered from the outset, at Biziondo we always prioritize the least invasive treatment that can benefit the patient. Since there was no significant loss of strength or criteria for immediate surgical emergency, we decided to perform an image-guided cervical injection to reduce inflammation of the affected nerve root and alleviate the pain. The result was very positive: within a few days, the patient was practically pain-free and, for the time being, has been able to avoid surgery. Even so, each case is different, and not all patients with neck pain radiating down the arm, tingling, a heavy arm, or a cervical herniated disc should follow the same treatment.
