MANHOLE DISMANTLED! LAND DRAIN INSTALLED! INTRESTING PROCESS Llangollen Canal BREACH!

Land Drain Installed! Thursday, 16th July 2026 Llangollen Canal Breach – Latest Update! Yesterday was another busy day on site! Work began on the new land drain by excavating a ditch across the far field. This became necessary because many of the old land drainage pipes had been damaged and were never replaced. As a result, water started pooling in the field again, making it clear that a new drainage system was needed. The plan was to connect the new drain into the existing manhole in the field. Not much more happened with the drain yesterday because, after the workers returned from their break, the tree surgeons arrived to fell the dead oak tree. That was certainly an impressive sight to watch! Today it was time to continue installing the land drain. First, the ditch was excavated all the way to the manhole, and it quickly became clear that part of the manhole would need to be dismantled so the new drainage pipe could be connected. Next, a layer of geotextile membrane was laid in the bottom of the trench to support the pipe. Meanwhile, back at the compound, a large delivery of aggregate arrived, which was soon transported to the trench. Shortly afterwards, three coils of perforated drainage pipe arrived. These were loaded into the dumper and taken down to the excavation. One of the pipes was then installed in the trench. The team removed several bricks from the side of the manhole before inserting the pipe, allowing water collected from the surrounding land to drain directly into the manhole. Once in place, the pipe was covered with a layer of aggregate before the geotextile membrane was folded back over the top. Finally, the trench will be backfilled with the excavated soil. This type of drainage system is known as a **French drain**. While the large excavator was fitted with the ditching bucket, the operator also took the opportunity to continue dredging the mill stream. This time the focus was on making it significantly deeper, whereas previous work had concentrated mainly on widening the channel. It looks as though, once this drain is complete, the team will move on to another one, as there are still two more coils of drainage pipe waiting to be installed. Hello and welcome to Taylors Aboard.
