Ala Solar, Escultura de Alejandro Otero en Bogotá CAD
What is Ala Solar Who is Alejandro Otero? What is Art? To who belong monuments and sculptures? What Historic memory is? What makes us feel apathy and think that this ugly thing in the intersection between 26 street and Américas in the District Administrative Center, is maybe a framework for a construction project, or perhaps a support for a lost billboard? Or maybe the perfect place for homeless people to seek shelter and burn a wood fire every night? Really you may get scared because that place is so desolated and abandoned. Also, it is nasty because the water in the base of the “framework” is dirty and black as the waters of Bogotá River are when it ends in Magdalena River. That place has been transformed across the decades. When the sculpture was installed there was a vehicular round point, 15 years later a bridge was built, 15 years later that bridge was demolished and they build a tunnel subway, and as silent witness “the framework” remain up, next to four more trees that have been grown and maybe all of them will be condemned to disappear as well as the sculpture, once the construction of the Historic Memory Museum starts. The winner for the National Museum of Historic Memory architectural design contemplates the full restauration of the sculpture, but a new derogatory law made by the current major is declaring now that “the framework” is just an artistic object (not a sculpture anymore) and as such, it can be moved, disassembled, forgotten, precisely as the historic memory of many Colombians. The ironic result is then build the National Museum of Historic Memory and forget about the sculpture. Although it is expensive restore it, I believe it deserve it because of all these years of endurance, resisting indifference and forget, to the scrap dealers, and nature elements. I also believe, that it must be restored as a proof of respect to the country who donate it: Venezuela and to the Maestro sculptor, Alejandro Otero whose kind gesture of brotherhood would be seriously hurt if it is moved or scrapped as garbage. If you can stop by Washington DC, see Delta Solar, in the Smithsonian Museum. Maybe, one sunset evening, staring of the spinning blades reflecting the colors of the Sun in the sunset, while you feel the wind blow, you will end up enchanted, in love, renewed, and you begin speak up to the authorities to take action, to find solutions, to recruit volunteers to go there and clean, protect this magnificent sculpture of kinetic art. I invite you to dream as me, hoping to see their blades spin and in the reflection contemplate the colors changing on a sunset in the capital city, and make justice to the National Museum of Historic Memory Credits in this video: • Meditation on Delta Solar Debra Derickson - Meditation on Delta Solar • Video Carlos Solano - Ala solar 1976 - Alejandro Otero CAMILA LOBOGUERRERO.
