Putorana Plateau, summer 1986. Geologist Viktor Malakhov sets out on a three-day hike, leaving nine people behind at camp. He returns at dawn to find the base empty: the coals in the stove are still warm, dinner is on the table, the flight recorders are ticking, the radio is on, and no one is there. Two deep helicopter landing gear ruts run along the river. Following the ruts, Viktor reaches an unnamed hill, a concrete cap, and a sealed door stenciled "Purga Object. 1974." Years later, he learns that the group was urgently evacuated during the night and asked to sign a document.
