Let us know in the comments! In the third episode of National Geographic Polska's "All the Secrets of the Slavs" series, Szymon Zdziebłowski talks with Professor Paweł Żmudzki from the University of Warsaw about the myth of Great Lechia – a supposed ancient Polish empire that, according to proponents, encompassed half of Europe several thousand years ago. The professor explains that the source of this legend is the chronicle of Wincenty Kadłubek (13th century), who created an epic tale of indigenous Poles, valiant Lechites, and Vandals defeating the Romans and Alexander the Great – undated and with a purely literary flair. The conversation touches on the Prokosz Chronicle (a 19th-century forgery). It also addresses why the myth of Great Lechia lives on – responding to the human need for national pride and identity. Professor Żmudzki explains that it is a fascinating example of how medieval chronicles construct an emotional vision of the past. 00:00 – Where does the name "Great Lechia" come from? Wincenty Kadłubek as the first source 02:05 – Who was Kadłubek and why did he write an "epic" instead of a history with dates 04:14 – Poles as eternal autochthons: without the Bible, without migration 09:07 – Lechites, Vandals, Poles: Kadłubek's unclear names 12:04 – Medieval successors: who accepted and who rejected the myth 16:09 – Where do the lists of Lechia's kings come from? Only Kadłubek, no independent sources 22:55 – Prokosz's Chronicle: 19th-century forgery dependent on Kadłubek 26:47 – Archaeology decides: no strongholds or coins before the 10th century 29:39 – True Slavs of the 6th-8th centuries: without an empire, under Avarian rule 33:49 – Samo's first Slavic state: ephemera without trace 36:11 – Why does the myth of Great Lechia still live on? The need for national pride 39:37 – “Great Lechia, Great Hoax” exhibition: explain, don't fight / natgeopl #Slavs #Lechia #NationalGeographicpolska
