Io sono mondo, non sono né corpo né cervello | Riccardo Manzotti | TEDxUdine
Riccardo Manzotti is a professor of theoretical philosophy at IULM University in Milan. He holds degrees in both philosophy and engineering, and after earning a doctorate in robotics, he has always been interested in the physical basis of consciousness. Neuroscience doesn't know why the brain experiences the world. Information is colorless, yet we see colors. How is this possible? This is the Hard Problem. What if the solution were completely different? Spread Mind advances an extraordinary hypothesis: consciousness of the world is nothing other than the world around us; it is not inside the brain, but outside our body. When I see an apple, am I a brain or am I the apple itself? Questioning the identity between mind and body and embracing the identity between mind and physical object, Spread Mind argues that our consciousness is not inside our body, is not a product of neurons, but is physically outside the body. Consciousness is nothing other than the world that exists relative to our body. This talk was presented at a TEDx event that uses the TED conference format, but was independently organized by a local community. Graduate in Philosophy and Engineering, after his PhD in Robotics he has worked on the physical basis of consciousness. Neurosciences have little to no knowledge of how and why the brain experiences the world. Information is colourless, yet we see the colours: how is that possible? This is the Hard Problem. What if the solution to this problem is a radically, different-than-any-previous-one ever considered? The Spread Mind puts forward an extraordinary hypothesis: the consciousness of the world is nothing but the world around us; it is not inside the brain, but outside our body. When I see an apple, the question is whether I am my brain (and therefore its neural activity) or the apple itself. By questioning the concept of identity between mind and body and embracing the one between mind and physical objects, the Spread Mind states that our consciousness is not the product of neural activity inside our body, but the objects physically outside it that we are conscious of. Consciousness is nothing but the world that exists outside our body. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Graduated in both philosophy and engineering, after his doctorate in robotics he has always worked on the problem of the physical basis of consciousness. He has studied perception, artificial intelligence, hallucinations, and the psychology of art both in Italy and abroad (Trinity College in Dublin, KAIST in South Korea, Northwestern University in Chicago, Fulbright Visiting Researcher at MIT in Boston, and visiting professor at the UAEE in the United Arab Emirates). Recently, he published two international volumes on the Spread Mind, the theory that summarizes his work: Consciousness and Object (John Benjamin, Amsterdam) and The Spread Mind (OR Books, New York). He has edited a series of dialogues on this theory in the New York Review of Books.
