What triggers your sneezing fits and swollen eyes? Pretty much everyone knows someone who has some kind of allergy. Pollen and pet dander are classic examples. Did you know that you can have allergic reactions to water, meat, and even sports? This isn't a joke; in the case of sports, it's called an exercise-induced allergy. It's important to know that allergies can be very serious in the worst-case scenario and, in the case of anaphylactic shock, can even be fatal. The number one medication for allergies: Antihistamines For most people, antihistamines are the first-line treatment, including the well-known cetirizine. These medications are available as tablets, drops, or nasal sprays. As the name suggests, antihistamines weaken the effects of histamine and thus suppress the overreaction of the immune system. Histamine is a messenger substance produced by the body that is released during an allergic reaction and causes its typical symptoms. Antihistamines prevent these reactions and a more severe allergic attack. . , Medication No. 2 for Allergies: Cortisone In cases of severe allergic reactions, the well-known glucocorticoid cortisone is often used. It can suppress the allergic reaction by inhibiting the body's immune response to, for example, animal hair through various mechanisms. Its effect is achieved by inhibiting the activation of inflammatory cells and the production of messenger substances that promote inflammation. This prevents hypersensitivity. Medication No. 3 for Allergies: Adrenaline in Emergencies The guideline for the acute treatment of anaphylaxis recommends the administration of the hormone adrenaline as the most important treatment. You are certainly familiar with this as the body's number one stress hormone. It is most effective in counteracting anaphylaxis and its symptoms by quickly stabilizing the circulatory system. Desensitization as a Last Resort? The various medications listed have in common that they can only combat the symptoms, not the allergy itself. Desensitization, a type of allergy shot, could be a solution. This approach tackles the allergy at its root, gradually reducing hypersensitivity to an allergen. During desensitization, the specific allergen is administered in small doses, either by injection or as drops or tablets.
