Ukraine’s 3,000km Range Cruise Missile ‘Flamingo’ Strikes Russian Arms Factory (Seoul = Yonhap News) Ukraine’s domestically developed long-range cruise missile, the ‘FP-5 Flamingo,’ is demonstrating its power on the battlefield. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on the 10th (local time) at X, “Ukraine’s long-range sanctions against Russian military facilities and the oil industry are continuing,” adding, “Last night, an FP-5 Flamingo struck a Russian arms facility in Cheboksary that supplies drone and missile components.” The Ukrainian General Staff also confirmed the attack, stating that the Penir-Progress factory, an arms facility in Cheboksary, was struck. This factory is located about 1,000km from the Ukrainian border and is known to produce components essential for the Russian military’s long-range weapon systems, such as jamming prevention devices. Defense Express, a media outlet specializing in military affairs, estimated that approximately five FP-5 Flamingo missiles were used in this attack, with two of them likely hitting the target. The FP-5 Flamingo is a ground-launched long-range cruise missile developed by Firepoint, a Ukrainian defense startup. With a maximum range of 3,000 km, it can put the Russian capital, Moscow, within striking distance. It features a warhead weighing 1.1 tons—more than double that of a Tomahawk missile—and a top speed of 900 km/h. It is also equipped with a navigation system that combines Global Positioning System (GPS), Inertial Navigation System (INS), and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Last August, President Zelenskyy praised the missile upon announcing the successful test launch of the FP-5 Flamingo, stating, "This is the greatest achievement among the missiles we possess to date." The name "Flamingo" is believed to have been given because the initial production batch was painted pink due to technical issues. According to Reuters, Ukraine also fired FP-5 Flamingo missiles at several Russian military facilities, including the Bnir-Progress plant, on the 5th of last month. Watch the video.
