Why Don't Movies Sound Like They Used To?
The dreaded near-field mix has almost completely replaced original theatrical soundtracks for home video releases. There are exceptions but I feel we almost need a campaign, or a lobby, to try to get the home video industry to return to applying the original sound to home video discs, particularly 4K UHD which is the premium format for home cinema today. I knew something wasn't quite right about 25 years ago because I'd had LaserDisc for a long time and many of the latest DVD's at that time were not sounding as impressive as the format that had gone before. Comments on my channel here made me aware of the 'near-field mix' for the home market and I am now looking into how widespread this is. Glimpses of Top Gun and other films on screen in this video are for illustrative purposes only.
