Our trip to French Meadows almost ended before it even began. We left home towing our 23-foot Airstream behind our Toyota 4Runner, expecting an easy drive into Tahoe National Forest. Instead, Google Maps nearly routed us onto a dangerous mountain road, every planned water stop failed, and we found ourselves desperately searching for fresh water before reaching camp. Along the way we also put the 4Runner to the test on steep 11% grades, long climbs over 5,000 feet, and winding mountain roads while towing near its limits. Thankfully, one incredibly kind stranger completely changed the outcome of our trip.
