A quiet New Year visit to Kango Shrine in Nara, Japan. I visited this small local shrine on January 2. On this day, a beautiful Hatsukagura ritual was performed by two miko, or shrine maidens. Hatsumode is the first shrine visit of the New Year in Japan. People visit shrines to pray for health, happiness, and good fortune in the coming year. The morning was clear and bright, and the shrine grounds were filled with soft winter sunlight. Small offerings such as rice cakes and vegetables were placed at each small shrine, creating a warm and festive New Year atmosphere. The shrine felt very alive, supported by the local community. There was also a serving of amazake, a sweet traditional drink often enjoyed in winter. I am not usually fond of amazake, but with ginger, it was surprisingly good. This is a quiet record of a peaceful New Year morning in Nara — shrine buildings, sunlight, offerings, miko dance, and the calm atmosphere of a local Japanese shrine. No talking, only music and scenery.
