This video captures the sacred shrine maiden dance “Yaotome-no-Mai,” filmed on June 1, 2017, at Miho Shrine in Mihonoseki, Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, Japan. Traditionally, “Yaotome-no-Mai” is performed by eight shrine maidens, which is reflected in the name “Yaotome,” meaning “eight maidens.” On this day, however, the dance was gracefully offered by two miko in a calm and reverent performance. Holding kagura-suzu (sacred bells), the shrine maidens move with quiet elegance, filling the shrine with a sense of purity and prayer. The changing light and atmosphere of each season give the dance a unique and timeless beauty.
