Has BUDAPEST Changed Since this American Visitor Filmed It in 1969?

Budapest, Hungary in 1969 — a remarkable journey through the city during the late socialist era, as seen from the point of view of a privileged visitor, an American on a trade mission. This rare color 16mm footage begins with views from the famous Danubius Hotel Gellért overlooking the Szabadság Bridge, followed by a slow pan south along the opposite bank of the Danube. Visible throughout are symbols of the period, including the large red star atop Karl Marx University and views toward the area now occupied by the modern Bálna Budapest. The film then moves into the Buda Castle district, featuring the magnificent Matthias Church, Szentháromság tér, and Fisherman's Bastion — itself crowned at the time by another enormous red star. Included is a glimpse inside an elegant restaurant within Fisherman’s Bastion, capturing the atmosphere of luxury dining available exclusively to foreign visitors in Communist-era Budapest. The journey continues by taxi to the historic Pioneer Railway in the Buda Hills before concluding at the Citadella, with spectacular panoramic views over the Danube toward the iconic Hungarian Parliament Building. Part II will begin from this viewpoint, in a separate video. Clips from this footage are available for licensing. Please contact me by e-mail or visit my Pond5 artist profile for licensing inquiries.
