In February 1940, with German naval leaders convinced that British trawlers in the North Sea fishing grounds were helping the enemy watch mine channels and U boat routes, the Kriegsmarine sent six destroyers of the 1st Destroyer Flotilla out on Operation Wikinger. The sortie was meant to be a short offensive sweep, but naval and air coordination was poor, the winter sea was dangerous, and a Luftwaffe aircraft was also flying an anti shipping mission over the same waters...
