Roma - 4 marzo 2016 - Prima parte

On March 4, 2016, in Rome, on Via Igino Giordani, a 23-year-old man, Luca Varani, was murdered by two men a few years older than him: Manuel Foffo and Marco Prato. It wasn't just a murder: Luca Varani was tortured, struck more than 100 times with a hammer and two knives. The killers displayed ferocity and cruelty toward a person they didn't know, in Foffo's case, or only superficially, in Prato's case. They said they did it to understand what it feels like to hurt someone. Just two days after the crime, during an episode of a television program, the interrogation reports of one of the two arrested men were released, while the other was still being questioned. This clearly damaged the investigation. The crime was discussed at length, seeking explanations. It was almost reassuring to think that the two had acted under the influence of large quantities of cocaine and alcohol. But the trial judges, based on expert reports, ruled out mental incompetence. Luca Varani's life was portrayed according to stereotypes and clichés, and so were his murderers, portrayed in a way that conflated everything, making the actions of the victim and the murderers almost indistinguishable. The two new episodes of Indagini recount that crime. With hindsight, it's possible to reassess the facts and attempt to get to the origins of that crime, also analyzing how justice approached such a violent and seemingly unmotivated affair.
