The Arms Bill debate has begun in the House — and already the direction of travel is clear. Dan Rosewarne MP is calling for a ban on push-button action rifles, not because of any evidence of harm in New Zealand, but simply because other countries have done it. Others are once again focusing on the appearance of firearms rather than their actual use or risk. We warned in 2019 that the semi-automatic prohibitions were the start of a one-way slope. The language now being used — “rapid-fire weapons” — is deliberate. It is designed to open the door to further restrictions on straight-pull rifles, lever-actions, and the remaining semi-automatics still held by licensed owners. This is not scaremongering. It is pattern recognition. Without a strong, united, professional voice for licensed firearms owners, further limits on the number of firearms you can own and the importation of calibre restrictions are not a question of if — only when.
