Exploring the INCREDIBLE FOOD of Budapest!

Budapest is an incredible city, and there is no better way to explore than through its food. We took some time to explore the different foods Budapest has to offer and ate as many delicious dishes as we could. Our first stop was the Great Market Hall or Central Market, the oldest and largest indoor market in Budapest. The market has so many different options it can be overwhelming. You can get groceries, snacks, or a sit down meal, as well as home goods. We walked through but did try some goose crackling, which is fried fatty goose skin. A delicious, rich treat. We next stopped at the Unicum Zwack distillery. This unique bitter herbal liqueur was founded right in Budapest. The distillery also includes a museum to see the unique history of Unicum’s role in the history of Budapest. The tour also came with samples, and we took some home to enjoy as this mysterious combination of flavors is not permitted for sale in the U.S. For a meaty treat, our next stop was Belvarosi Disznotoros in Budapest. This market/restaurant is known for its fresh pork products and delicious sides to go with it. We chose a variety of sausages, one featuring Hungary’s beloved spice Paprika, and some tangy red cabbage to balance out the savory, fatty meat. Somehow we managed to eat it all! We couldn’t go to Budapest without exploring some cafes. We went to multiple places on our trip to Budapest, but definitely enjoyed Central Kavehaz. We enjoyed a sampling of cakes and coffee, and this was a perfect sweet treat to enjoy this beautiful cafe. These are also great places to stop in for a delicious breakfast, and for a quick pastry and coffee we stopped at Cafe Gerbeaud. What a way to experience a beautiful historic location! While we didn’t stop in, Budapest also has a McDonald’s with a unique history. Budapest is home to the first McDonald’s behind the Iron Curtain that opened in 1988. If you are looking for a familiar meal with a unique history, this McDonald’s may be an option for you. Being in Budapest in November, we enjoyed stopping at one of the city’s Christmas markets to enjoy some local favorites. We tried some stuffed cabbage, but there were many local favorites to choose from. We also spent some time visiting a local ruin bar to enjoy some Palenka, a strong fruit brandy made from distilled fruits. Just as a caution, ours was very strong! For another dinner, we stopped at Getto Gulyas for some popular local favorites: chicken paprikash and goulash. The chicken paprikash, a chicken cooked in a creamy paprika sauce, was incredible. We also enjoyed a local goulash, which the Hungarian version is more like a soup than stew. We also enjoyed our meal with a local Hungarian wine. What a delicious meal! We topped off our food exploration with a chimney cake, a warm cake that is wrapped around to form a chimney shape. They can be filled with ice cream or other sweet sauces, but we decided to go with a simple, cinnamon sugar filling. This was a tasty way to finish out our food exploration in Budapest! ----LOCATIONS/ITEMS IN THE VIDEO---- Great Market Hall: https://www.budapestinfo.hu/en/great-...
