SERAMBINEWS.COM - Tensions in the Middle East have escalated again after Iran reportedly blocked the Strait of Hormuz amid an escalating conflict with the United States. This move is Tehran's response to US military activity in the Gulf region. According to Iran, the US military presence in the Gulf region has worsened the security situation in the world's strategic shipping lanes. On Sunday (July 12, 2026), Iran launched missile and drone attacks on several Gulf states, including Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Jordan, and Oman. The Qatari government reported injuries as a result of the attacks. Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates claimed to have intercepted several projectiles heading towards its territory. In retaliation, the US military launched attacks on several Iranian military facilities, including around Bandar Abbas Port and Qeshm Island. Meanwhile, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed to have attacked several US and allied military facilities in the region. Iran stated that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz was for navigational safety reasons. However, Washington denied this reasoning and emphasized that its military fleet would continue patrolling to ensure freedom of international navigation. This escalating conflict is also said to be hampering diplomatic efforts previously mediated by Oman and Pakistan. As one of the world's most important energy trade routes, any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz has the potential to trigger a spike in oil prices and destabilize the global economy.
