The Fatal Flaw Behind a $300 Million Airline Collapse
In the 1990s, Continental Airlines tried to beat Southwest at its own game. They built an airline inside an airline, gave it the toll-free number 1-800-PEANUTS, and based the whole experiment in a quiet North Carolina airport that looks completely different today. It didn't go well. By the time new CEO Gordon Bethune showed up, the project had burned through an estimated $300 million, gutted Continental's reputation, and turned Piedmont Triad International into a passenger traffic ghost town. This is the story of Continental Lite, the forgotten low-cost airline disaster, and the city it took down with it.
