BobBlast 625 - "Goof Proof Color Combinations, Part Three - Abstract, Yellow Dominant"
Weekly BobBlast Issue 625 Color Combinations, Part Three—Painting an Abstract, Yellow Dominant Welcome Back to Another BobBlast! This week’s BobBlast is part three, the final of this series using my Goof-Proof Color Wheel to paint an abstract. We have explored different color combinations, using only four colors. In the last BobBlast, the Color Red was the dominant. This week’s color combination starts with Yellow as the dominant color. I have a color wheel on all of my painting tables. I work on different series and themes all the time, just to keep it interesting. I use a color wheel as a guideline. It helps get me started so I can focus on my intentions in the very beginning. Once I start with the pure dominant color—in this case Yellow—then I expand the palette and my thinking with a variety of yellows and close colors. Using the Holbein Artist Acrylics, I will start with Hansa Yellow, then add Cadmium Yellow, then a little Marigold and maybe even some Pearl Gold and Luminous Yellow. So it’s never just one Yellow… I like choices! I should add that I am not mixing all these yellows together on my palette beforehand—I am painting all of the yellow-dominant colors all over the surface. Here is my formula for using the four colors: •Dominant Color is about 80% of the painting surface •The Focal Point color is about 10% in one area •Spice Colors are about 5% each, placed near the focal point color. The two Spice Colors augment and draw attention to the focal point. My Goof-Proof Color Wheel has only ten colors. To make it easy, there is a spinning pointer that points out the four color combinations. Once the four colors are determined and loosely brushed on the surface, that is when the painting takes off and I am able to paint in a creative fearless direction... Goof-Proof guaranteed! Don't forget—watch the video! This week, I demonstrate using my Goof-Proof Color Wheel in an Abstract painting, using Yellow as my dominant color. I hope you have enjoyed this three part series, exploring different color combinations. Stay tuned for the next BobBlast!
