Not everything in language can be explained by ideology, politics, or power relations—and forcing this interpretation not only generates misinterpretations but also makes us a laughingstock. In this video, I exemplify this tendency to think that all linguistic usage directly reflects social values. Using real examples (such as the supposed sexism behind the expression "my wife"), we will see some problems that these interpretations present. Let it be clear: the problem is not recognizing that language has a social dimension, but rather projecting a meaning where it doesn't exist. Language is complex and doesn't always confirm what we would like to find.
