Hidden Kashi Revealed, God Shiva’s Secret Spot! (Gupta Kashi)

Guptkashi, located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, sits quietly in the Mandakini valley on the route to Kedarnath, yet it carries a powerful spiritual story rooted in the Mahabharata. According to tradition, after the Kurukshetra War, the Pandavas were filled with guilt for killing their own relatives and gurus, a grave sin known as Gotrahatya. On the advice of Krishna Bhagavan and sages, they went in search of God Shiva to seek forgiveness and liberation. But Shiva, displeased with the destruction of the war, chose not to meet them and left Kashi, coming into the Himalayas to hide. This is where Guptkashi gets its name, “Gupta” meaning hidden and “Kashi” referring to the sacred city. Here, the main shrine, Kashi Vishwanath Temple Guptkashi, reflects the spiritual connection to Varanasi, and nearby stands the rare Ardhanarishvara Temple Guptkashi, symbolizing the unity of Shiva and Shakti. In front of the temple lies the sacred Manikarnika Kund, where two continuous water streams flow, one from an elephant-shaped spout representing Ganga and the other from a cow-shaped spout representing Yamuna, and this same water is used for the daily Abhishekam of the Shivlinga. It is believed that when the Pandavas finally reached here, Shiva took the form of a bull and tried to hide among the cattle, but Bhima recognized Him. As Bhima tried to catch Him, Shiva disappeared into the earth, and later different parts of His form appeared at five places known today as the Panch Kedar temples. Reaching Guptkashi is relatively straightforward, it lies about 45 km before Kedarnath on the Rishikesh to Kedarnath route. The nearest major railway station is in Rishikesh, and the nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport. From there, one can travel by road via Rudraprayag to reach Guptkashi, with regular taxis and buses available.
