FE Review - Surveying - Differential Leveling
Differential leveling is the process of measuring the difference in elevation between points. A transit level is used in combination with a rod or staff to determine elevations of points by obtaining differential vertical measurements. All elevations are referenced to a known elevation or benchmark. As the telescope is leveled, the line of sight is horizontal (or level). A graduated rod is held vertically at a point of known elevation. The elevation of the benchmark plus the rod reading (BS) at the benchmark gives the height of instrument (HI), which is the elevation of the line of sight. If the rod is now held vertically at some other location, its unknown elevation can be calculated as the elevation of the line of sight minus the rod reading (FS).
