Part One: Measuring the Vertical Distance in the Field Elevations on Traverse this project involves once again establishing elevations of the points on the traverse in our project site. We will use the Total Station to determine the elevations of the points. We will start by setting up on an arbitrary location and back sighting a know point with a known elevation. This is our bench mark. We will use point Orange as our bench mark. Once we have this, we will move to the other points, and take foresight readings on all of these points. Part Two: Calculating the Elevations of our Points Once all measurements are made, in the office we will use the vertical distances to find the change in elevation between the points. We start with the elevation of our bench mark, we then add the rod height to that elevation, and subtract the back sight. This will give us the Height of the Interment, or the HI. With the HI, we can then determine the elevation of every point by subtracting the rod height of our observed shot and adding the foresight vertical distance. About Professor Rami Tamimi: Rami Tamimi is an American doctorate student at The Ohio State University working towards his Doctor of Philosophy in Geodetic Engineering. With over 8 years of experience in the Land Development Industry, his experience revolves around traditional field surveying, civil design work using AutoCAD Civil 3D, and geospatial technology including LiDAR, SONOR, and Photogrammetric data acquisition and processing with the use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems or Drones. He is also a University Professor and creates instructional video content on YouTube.
