Battle of Tienhaara - Finland's Lock

On June 20, 1944, the city of Viipuri fell in hours, almost without a fight. The Soviet summer offensive was only ten days old and the road to Helsinki was open. One position stood in the way: Tienhaara. The lock of Finland. The lock was handed to Infantry Regiment 61, a unit of Swedish-speaking Finns pulled from the Syväri front only days earlier. On June 22, Lieutenant Colonel Alpo Marttinen's tired men took over the positions at the Kivisillansalmi strait. Two Soviet rifle divisions attacked with massed artillery and air support. Only a narrow strait stood between them and the open road west. Subscribe to catch the next episode from the frontline.
