I love a raw wood look. Sometimes you can achieve this look with paint washes. On this piece, I started by stripping the piece. I used Stripwell's QCS, followed by a carbide scraper. I cleaned off the top with a 50/50 mixture of denatured alcohol and water. Once it was dry, I moved on to sanding. I sanded through the grits, beginning with 120, followed by 150, and ending with 180. I cleaned and tacked the surface again. I was ready for the paint wash at this point. I used the same paint I used on the body in a 4:1 ratio of water to paint. I misted the top and then applied the wash with a paint brush. I like to use the fan brush by Zibra for paint washes. You have to work fairly quickly with washes because they can dry fast. I brush it on and wipe it back off in moments. After that was dry, I felt it needed to be evened out with a tan wash. I used the same ratio and procedure to apply the tan wash. The tan wash blends everything in and still allows the wood grain to show through. After it was dry, I topcoated with three coats of matte poly. What do you think?
