From the camp, he's sent to a penal battalion, and across the street are the SS—a crack unit accustomed to being feared. Sedy doesn't break: he works on them at night, just as he's accustomed to doing—quietly, without rules, one at a time, where the regiments fail. The Germans catch the ghost, knowing one distinguishing feature about him, which the survivors spotted: a gray head in the dark. And they give him their nickname, which appears in their reports. Two nicknames on either side—and not a single name: not on the award certificates, not on the stone.
