Autumn 1943, the forests near Bryansk. Escaped prisoner Ignat Koren, having escaped from a prisoner transfer, is precisely and silently attacking the Germans along the front lines. Tired of the ghost, the enemy sends a group of ten of his best rangers with one mission: find and kill. But they find themselves in enemy territory. The recidivist, for whom the forest has been home and shelter since childhood, doesn't run—he begins to hunt the hunters: traps, patience, silence, swamps and windfalls, where their training is worthless. He picks them off one by one. Of the ten, only one emerges—gray-haired, without numbers or diagrams in his report. The Germans never learned Koren's name.
