Why does this happen? In this video, I explain why pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, and walking difficulties in the legs are often more important than back pain when it comes to diagnosing spinal problems and deciding whether surgery may help. We discuss: • The difference between back pain and nerve pain • Why sciatica is different from ordinary back pain • How nerve compression produces symptoms in the legs • Why weakness gets a surgeon's attention • The role of walking tolerance in spinal stenosis • The difference between nerve root compression and spinal cord compression • Why surgery is often more effective for leg symptoms than back pain alone The key message is that the symptoms furthest away from the spine often tell us the most about what is happening within it. Diagnosis drives treatment. There are multiple professionals (surgeons, physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths and more) who treat back and spine problems. But often they work independent of each other and few patients have someone taking responsibility of overall oversight of care in a team. I started my practice to bring all professionals of spine care together under my direction as a surgeon to provide spine care that gets results. TOTAL SPINE CARE THAT GETS RESULTS!
