Do patients and providers see indolent systemic mastocytosis (ISM) the same way?
In this episode of The Itch Review, we dive into the study “Patient and Advanced Practitioner Perspectives on Symptom Burden and Symptom Management in Indolent Systemic Mastocytosis,” published in The Journal of the Advanced Practitioner in Oncology (May 2025). The findings reveal a disconnect between how patients experience ISM symptoms and how advanced practice providers (APPs) perceive them. Key takeaways from this episode: What is ISM and symptom burden? The Symptom Burden Gap: Only 24% of patients felt their ISM was well-controlled, while 76% of APPs believed their patients were doing well. What Patients Report Most: Fatigue, brain fog, and diarrhea topped the list of symptoms impacting quality of life, but weren’t always seen as top concerns by providers. Tracking Trouble: Tools like the ISM-SAF exist to measure symptoms, but most clinics don’t use them regularly or effectively. Mismatched Perspectives: Patients and APPs often don’t agree on which symptoms are most severe or hardest to manage. Thanks to Blueprint Medicines for sponsoring today’s episode.
