The Occupation of Antofagasta and the Combat of Calama occurred at the beginning of the War of the Pacific, confronting Chile and Bolivia due to the non-compliance of the Treaty of 1874 by the latter. During this part of the war, Bolivia lost Antofagasta, Calama, the Atacama Desert and the surrounding territories, remaining without access to the Pacific Ocean until the present time. Before 1866 the territories of the Atacama Desert were in dispute between the two countries and that dispute grew as wealth was discovered in the area.
