Längste Skisaison in Österreich: Hintertuxer Gletscher im Zillertal
Skiing well into spring: The Zillertal Valley boasts the longest ski season in Austria, with slopes reaching altitudes of over 3,000 meters and a valley run on the Hintertux Glacier that remains open until May. If so, where will you be hitting the slopes this season? Let us know your favorite spring skiing destinations in the comments! We start our day with fresh snow in Hintertux. Here, at 1,500 meters altitude, everything is white, and tiny snowflakes dance through the air. Winter isn't over yet; in fact, it's making a comeback with a vengeance. We zip up to the ski area on the glacier bus. We take the first lift at 8:15 a.m. and ride the gondola to the highest point. For a while, we pass through a thick blanket of clouds. But at the very top, at over 3,250 meters, we finally catch a glimpse of blue sky. Maybe this will turn out to be the perfect sunny ski day I'd been hoping for. The first run leaves nothing to be desired. We whiz down the frozen slope. A light layer of fresh snow covers the piste, and with every turn, it feels like we're gliding through clouds. The snow is powdery, and it's incredibly fun. I want to experience more of this today. So, we head straight back up. We take the drag lift that runs up below the Olperer. The sun has finally broken through the clouds. It's beautiful! By the way, the Betterpark is currently being built right here. The snowpark opens in mid-April and will then be "the place to be" for the freestyle scene. Large kickers and obstacles will invite riders to perform powerful jumps and tricks. We prefer to enjoy a few more runs and then head all the way back up to the top. Now that it's getting a bit brighter, we might get lucky and be able to admire the view. There's a viewing terrace right at the mountain station, at the highest point. On a clear day, we can see as far as the Berchtesgaden Alps and the Hohe Tauern mountain range. Unfortunately, it's still heavily overcast on the horizon. But we can now see the Olperer mountain really well. And there's a soft dusting of snow in the air. It looks like everything around us is sparkling. Absolutely beautiful! Around lunchtime, we stop at the Tuxer Fernerhaus. We could take a seat on the large sun terrace there. We also find a sunny spot inside. The large panoramic windows make it feel like we're sitting outside. We can take off our jackets here, which isn't possible outside yet. But it's getting warmer and warmer out there every day now that it's spring. Soon we'll be able to really enjoy ourselves outside. By the way, I had a delicious penne with pesto and shrimp. After lunch, it's back to the slopes. We make our way up to the Tuxer Joch. From up here begins one of the longest valley runs in the Zillertal. The snow-sure descent winds its way down to Hintertux for over 7 km and more than 1,000 meters of vertical drop. If you were to ski all the way down, you could expect warm, burning thighs. But I can't manage that today. The run through the fluffy powder has already taken its toll. So I'm taking it easy and we're stopping for a break or two. After lunch, it's back on the slopes. If you're also planning a trip to the Zillertal in spring, you can also visit the three other ski resorts. Kaltenbach-Fügen, the Zillertal Arena, and Mayrhofen with its infamous Harakiri run are also open until April. And as the weather slowly warms up, various events are taking place there as well. March 22 & 23, 2024 - Alpicon House Music Festival in Hochzillertal-Hochfügen April 5-7, 2024 - Lederhosen Wedel Weekend in the Zillertal Arena April 8-13, 2024 - Snowbombing Festival in Mayrhofen April 13, 2024 - Schi & JOSH in concert on the Hintertux Glacier If you enjoyed the video, please give it a thumbs up and subscribe so you don't miss anything. See you next time! :)
