This camera-car journey starts at the Col du Lautaret (2058 m), climbs up to the legendary Col du Galibier (2670 m), and descends towards the charming alpine village of Valloire (1430 m). This route is a part of the famous Route des Grandes Alps, you can find other sectors in this channel 🛣️ Route details Distance: ~34 km Elevation gain: +600 m (Lautaret → Galibier) Highest point: Col du Galibier, 2670 m (one of the highest paved passes in the Alps) Temperature during filming: 11°C at the summit, ~20°C in Valloire Road conditions: Narrow alpine road with sharp bends, breathtaking views, and dramatic rock landscapes. 📖 Historical & geographical notes The Col du Galibier opened in 1876 and has since become an icon of alpine crossings. It is a regular stage in the Tour de France, often decisive in mountain stages due to its steep gradients and altitude. The Galibier tunnel (built in 1891 at 2556 m) was the original route before the road over the summit was opened. The pass connects the regions of Savoie and Hautes-Alpes, linking the Romanche and Maurienne valleys. 🌍 Tourist highlights Panoramic views over the Écrins massif, La Meije (3983 m), and the Vanoise range. Valloire, at the foot of the Galibier, is famous for its ski resorts and the International Ice and Snow Sculpture Competition. The Galibier is also a popular challenge for cyclists and motorcyclists. It is celebrated for its spectacular and impressive panoramic views of the Alps, making it a popular destination for scenic drives and a key part of the Route des Grandes Alpes 🤔 Fun facts At its opening, the Galibier was considered “impassable” for cars. Today it’s one of the most spectacular mountain roads in Europe. The pass is often closed from October to May due to heavy snow.
