It marks the boundary between the departments of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Alpes-Maritimes, connecting the town of Barcelonnette in the Ubaye Valley to Saint-Guillaume and the upper Var Valley. Located within the heart of the Mercantour National Park, the pass is celebrated for its preserved natural beauty and serves as a vital link along the Route des Grandes Alpes, a famous tourist itinerary that traverses the French Alps from north to south. Geologically, the pass is characterized by rugged limestone formations and high-altitude alpine meadows. The ascent from the north, starting in Barcelonnette, follows the Bachelard river through a narrow, winding gorge before opening into wide pastures near the summit. The southern descent follows the source of the Var River, passing through the dramatic red shale scenery of the Gorges de Daluis further downstream. Because of its high altitude and heavy snowfall during the winter months, the road is typically closed to motor traffic from November through late May or early June. Historically, the route was developed for strategic and commercial purposes, though it remained a mule track for centuries. The modern paved road was inaugurated in the early 20th century, specifically in 1914, by French President Raymond Poincaré.
