It is also the capital district of the province of the same name. The city is situated in a fertile coastal region on the Black Sea, where there is a temperate maritime climate. High mountains separate the city from the interior of Anatolia. Trabzon was a prominent place on the Silk Road and became of great importance for international trade between Europe and Asia in the first half of the 19th century. The opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 put an end to the intensive international trade in the city. Yet today it is still an important port on the Black Sea for transport to the Caucasus and Iran. Trabzon is also the most important city on the south coast of the Black Sea from a cultural, historical and sporting point of view and is therefore considered the unofficial capital of the Pontus (the Turkish Black Sea region of Karadeniz). The town's nickname is Little Istanbul or Little Constantinople, because of its imperial history (Greek empire Trebizonde).
