🌊 Bajo las AGUAS del lago Cabrera duerme una HISTORIA OCULTA 🕯️ HORNOPIRÉN - Vanlife Chile

A hike that's not described, it's felt 🌧️🌲 In this 26th episode of season four, I take you with me on a nearly two-hour trek to Laguna Cabrera, very near Hornopirén, in the Los Lagos Region. We trek through a humid, lush, and rainy forest, with a climate that shifts and clears, crossing wooden walkways over mud and completely flooded areas. The path bears traces of old sawmills and settlements of larch shingle makers, one of the hardest and most silent trades in southern Chile. In the middle of the forest, a wooden grotto appears with a Christ carved from a huge tree trunk: a memorial that commemorates the tragedy of February 19, 1965, when a landslide from the Yates volcano plunged into Lake Cabrera, generating a devastating wave that swept away entire families. Nearly 30 people died, and only one body was ever recovered. The trail continues to Laguna Cabrera, with the Hornopirén volcano to one side and, in the distance, the Yates volcano with its snow-capped peaks watching over it all. A cloudy day, thousands of chucaos singing in unison, and a silence that invites meditation. On the way back, I talk with Don Raúl, one of the last larch shingle makers, who shares his story, his craft, and his memories of the catastrophe.
