Dispersed camping near Smith Rock, Oregon — incredible views, zero crowds, and roads that will absolutely humble a 32-foot motorhome. We knew the roads into Henderson Flat OHV area weren't going to be smooth. What we maybe underestimated was just how not smooth. One wrong line and the motorhome finds the ditch. Again. Yes, again. To be fair, the view from a stuck motorhome is still a pretty good view out here. Less reassuring was the possibility that we may have damaged the grey tank on the way out. Nothing like adding a plumbing question mark to an already eventful afternoon. 😬 When the roads cooperated — and we cooperated with the roads — the payoff was real. The Henderson Flat OHV area in Culver is a genuinely spectacular piece of Central Oregon high desert, and Smith Rock State Park delivered everything it's famous for: dramatic volcanic spires, the Crooked River winding below, and hikes that make you stop every hundred yards for a photo. We also spent some time exploring Redmond, which makes a solid basecamp town for the area. Dispersed camping is still worth it. We stand by this. The roads, however, remain a work in progress.
