#TagaraputraTimes - Mumbai between the 11th and 13th centuries by Dr Kurush Dalal Conducted on 25th July 2020 The pre-colonial history of Mumbai is perhaps its least-known and best-kept secret. Before the arrival of the Portuguese in the 16th century CE, the city was a part of the Rashtrakuta Empire under their vassals, the Northern Shilaharas, who hailed from the city of Tagara in Marathwada. After the decline of the Rashtrakutas, the Shilaharas became independent rulers of the Thane and Raigad districts of Maharashtra, an area known as Thane-Konkan, and ruled from their capital city of Shristhanake, modern-day Thane city. They were patrons of the arts and literature, and gave numerous land grants. On our Online Talk #TagaraputraTimes, archaeologist Dr Kurush Dalal discusses the abundant but little-known evidences of the Shilaharas in Mumbai. About the speaker: Dr Kurush Dalal holds a doctorate in Archaeology from Deccan College, Pune University, and is the Co-Director of the Salcette Explorations Project, a massive urban archaeology project documenting the archaeology of Mumbai, since 2015.
