We Tested 4 Violin Mutes & You Can Actually See the Difference!

Violinist and MyLuthier co-founder Ariel Lang tests a series of violin mutes on the same instrument, in the same room, with the same bow and the same piece. The only variable is the mute itself. We listen to the difference, and thanks to a spectral visualiser, we also see it. Ariel is playing a 2025 violin by Icelandic maker Hans Johannsson. https://www.myluthier.co/product/viol... The bridge becomes less free to vibrate the way it normally would. Less energy is transmitted into the body of the violin, and the tone changes. A mute is not just a volume knob. It reshapes how the instrument speaks. What's tested in this video The violin played open, with no mute, as the reference sound. A range of mutes, from a light orchestral mute through to a heavy practice mute. A spectral view of each, so you can see how the harmonic content shifts. The conditions Same instrument. Same player. Same bow. Same room. Same microphone position. Same piece. Only the mute changes. About the Listening Room compare.myluthier.co is a blind comparison platform built by MyLuthier.
