The Truth About Violin Thickness
n violin making, plate thickness is one of the most delicate and misunderstood aspects of the instrument. At first glance, it might seem logical that two violins made from the same model, with the same wood and the same thicknesses, should sound identical. But in reality, this is almost never the case. In this video, I explain why violin plate thickness cannot be treated as a fixed formula. Every piece of wood behaves differently, even when it comes from the same species or looks similar at first sight. Thickness must always be adjusted in relation to the specific characteristics of the wood, its density, elasticity, and how it responds during the making process. Understanding this relationship between wood and thickness is one of the key skills in violin making. It requires experience, careful observation, and a deep sensitivity to the material.
