Brezhnev, along with his allies, brutally cracked down on reforms implemented by Czech and Slovak communists. Meanwhile, in connection with the so-called Prague Spring, censorship was relaxed and civil liberties were increased. And although Alexander Dubček, the leader of Czechoslovakia, assured that there was no way his country would leave the Warsaw Pact and the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance, these assurances were insufficient for Brezhnev. The Kremlin dictator stated openly that counterrevolutionaries had gained a voice in Prague. Other leaders of the people's democracies, including Władysław Gomułka of Poland and Walter Ulbricht of East Germany, expressed a similar opinion. You can learn more by watching the latest episode.
