Well right now, it's fragrance. I also drool over vintage clothes, but pre pandemic, I also loved Topshop, Warehouse, Oasis, New Look and Primark; some well known UK fast fashion brands. I didn't buy a lot, but I was, for sure, someone who couldn't resist a fast fashion bargain... I now see a few parallels between my perfume purchasing and consumption, its economics, marketing and lifecycle, as well the influence of social media on my choices, just like with fast fashion clothing (and actually makeup too). Like many others, I watched those shocking fast fashion documentaries a few years ago and saw those piles of waste. These days, I try to limit the amount of new clothing that I buy. My wardrobe is around 30% secondhand, but what about fragrance? Well it's similar really, I do buy a lot of secondhand fragrances, I resell them if I no longer want them and I am trying to sample more, but I am far from perfect. Here I discuss the issue of fast fashion fragrances, show you the vast amount of money generated in the fragrance industry and its eye-watering year on year unsustainable growth. I will also highlight a few social media concepts that will be incredibly familiar to you, but in essence, are just plain nuts, and have certainly contributed to the almost disposal feel to perfumes today.
