Nganjuk – Thousands of residents and officials from Nganjuk Regency crowded the Sedudo Waterfall area on the slopes of Mount Wilis, Ngliman Village, Sawahan District, on Sunday (June 28, 2026) to participate in the Siraman Sedudo ritual. This tradition has been passed down through generations every month of Suro or Muharram. The sacred procession was attended by Nganjuk Regent Marhaen Djumadi, Deputy Regent Trihandy Cahyo Saputro, members of the Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkopimda), regional officials, and tourists from various cities. As observed by detikJatim, the series of rituals began with a traditional procession at around 9:00 a.m. Western Indonesian Time, led by traditional elders and accompanied by Javanese gamelan music. The sacredness of the procession was further enhanced by the Bedhayan Amek Tirta dance performed by the ten young girls. This dance symbolizes gratitude to God Almighty before descending into the pool. Accompanied by ten young men, the young women then collected Sedudo water using small jugs, which were then stored in special containers. After the water-collecting process was complete, Regent Marhaen Djumadi, along with members of the Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkopimda), dressed in traditional Javanese attire, performed a ritual bathing directly under the spray of the Sedudo Waterfall. Marhaen stated that the Sedudo Siraman (bathing bath) is not just a cultural tradition. It also serves as a moment of self-purification and a collective prayer for blessings for the community. "All blessings are by the permission and consent of Allah. This tradition is an effort and prayer. Some hope for a partner, children, good health, and eternal youth, but all ultimately returns to Allah SWT," Marhaen said on Sunday (June 28, 2026). According to Marhaen, the ritual bathing involves wetting the entire body, without using soap or shampoo. He described this as a form of respect for the sustainability of the Sedudo spring. Gunawan Widagdo, Head of the Youth, Sports, Culture, and Tourism Agency (Disporabudpar) of Nganjuk Regency, added that Siraman Sedudo is a cultural heritage that must be preserved. "Because it has historical and spiritual value, it is also a regional tourist attraction," said Gunawan. Sedudo Waterfall itself originates from nine springs on Mount Wilis, which converge into a single stream. These springs are Banyu Iber, Banyu Lawe, Banyu Cagak, Singokromo, Sadepok, Sumber Selanjar, Srigunting, Sumber Kanoman, and finally, the Sedudo spring.
