What it is Most bladder cancers start in the inner lining of the bladder (called the urothelium). The most common type is urothelial carcinoma (also called transitional cell carcinoma). Common symptoms Bladder cancer often shows early warning signs, especially: Blood in urine (may look pink, red, or cola-colored) Frequent urination Pain or burning during urination Feeling the need to urinate even when the bladder isn’t full Lower back pain (in more advanced cases) Risk factors Several things can increase the risk: Smoking (biggest risk factor) Exposure to certain industrial chemicals Chronic bladder inflammation Older age (more common after 55) Male sex (more common in men) Diagnosis Doctors may use: Urine tests (to detect blood or cancer cells) Imaging (CT scan, ultrasound) Cystoscopy (a thin camera inserted into the bladder) Biopsy (to confirm cancer type) Treatment options Treatment depends on how advanced the cancer is: Early-stage (non-invasive) Tumor removal via cystoscopy Intravesical therapy (medicine placed directly into bladder, e.g., BCG) More advanced cancer Surgery (partial or full bladder removal) Chemotherapy Radiation therapy Immunotherapy Prognosis When detected early, bladder cancer is often highly treatable.
